How did the Bucks County Playhouse get those stylish draft beer towers? Learn the real story about how Cabaret Design Group and Micro Matic teamed-up to design the bar known as “The Deck”…
THE INTRODUCTION
The phone call was like many others. “We’re trying to fit a large bar into a new addition and we aren’t sure if it’s going to fit.” Those were the words of James Maxwell, Jr., president of J.R. Maxwell Builders. Maxwell’s construction company was the general contractor for the new addition to the Bucks County Playhouse. “This wasn’t an unusual inquiry,” according to Rick Uzubell, president of Cabaret Design Group. “People call us all the time in situations like this, because the owner’s architect doesn’t have enough expertise in bar design to make critical decisions,” said Uzubell.
HOW THE BAR DESIGN FOR THE BUCKS COUNTY PLAYHOUSE EVOLVED
The Bucks County Playhouse underwent an expansion in 2017 and hired J.R. Maxwell Builders as the general contractor. The new addition features roll-up garage doors that overlook the Delaware River. Everyone felt the area designated for the new bar would be large enough accommodate their vision. However, during construction there was concern that the space may not be quite what everyone anticipated. This is when they called Rick Uzubell to validate the design.
THE VALUE OF BAR PLANNING
Using block planning, Rick immediately created a preliminary bar layout that verified that the space was capable of achieving its mission (refer to Figure 1). The new addition to the Bucks County Playhouse is a classic example of how bar planning is so critical to bar design. Cabaret Design Group eventually partnered with industry leader Micro Matic to design the draft beer system, as described in the story below. The owners are very happy with their new bar!
